Local mum wins UnLtd award for The Clothing Exchange

Sara Marsh, mother of one, has won an award to develop her community based business idea and start The Clothing Exchange. The Clothing Exchange, set to launch late autumn, will sell quality, preowned children’s clothing and maternity wear through a network of agents across the county. The grant from UnLtd recognises that the concept has broader social and environmental benefits embedded within it; creating local employment and using resources efficiently were two of the major benefits that attracted the funders.

Sara Marsh explained ‘I have had this idea in my mind for nearly two years, I was ecstatic when I heard about the award from UnLtd, it’s really exciting to see it finally come to fruition. My sister was my inspiration, she was complaining that she never had time to plough through the racks in charity shops and besides shopping with toddlers in tow made any sort of browsing impossible. So I got thinking and came up with a solution - The Clothing Exchange is a cross between ebay, Tupperware and a dress agency, and combines the best bits of all of them, most importantly making shopping fun, social and affordable.’

Sara went on to outline how it works, ‘A network of Clothing Exchange Agents will sell at venues and hosted parties within their local community, possibly even from their own homes too. These same agents will also provide local drop off points for parents wishing to sell clothes through The Clothing Exchange. Once an item sells the proceeds are split between the original owner, the agent and The Clothing Exchange. There are so many benefits to The Clothing Exchange: child friendly environments, creating local employment that fits around raising a family, reusing valuable resources, affordable quality items and supporting the local economy. I am delighted that UnLtd have given me the opportunity to develop this and am looking forward to seeing it become a success. I’ve already had enquiries from upcountry about franchise possibilities!’

Annabel Sampson, Development Manager for UnLtd, said ‘We are delighted to be able to fund a project like Sara’s. The Clothing Exchange is a fantastic initiative which will help create employment and give back to the local community in a fun and imaginative way. Sara is an inspirational individual who UnLtd is thrilled to support and help her dream come to life.’

UnLtd provides Level 1 Awards of up to £5,000 for social entrepreneurs, who use their business skills to solve social or environmental problems rather than generating profits for owners or shareholders. Successful applicants also benefit from ongoing advice and support and Level 2 Awards of up to £15,000 are available to progress existing projects.
